the shelby gt 500 will roll off the line and beat the 400hp bow tie. Ford is scheduled to produce 9-10k shelby 500's this year and plan to continue producing them until at least 2010. It is predicted that by the beginning of 2009 at the latest but probally sometime around july of 08 becase of the increase in production the shelby gt 500 will be available for msrp which is 42k. The shelby gt 500 wieghts 200 more pounds then the projected wieght of the camaro. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that a 500hp 3700lbs car will beat a 400hp 3500lbs car by a country mile. It really isnt even close. There have been alot of talk of the return of a 5.0 liter v8 for the 2010 mustang gt that will produce 380hp. I havent heard a whole lot of the details on this car as ford is keeping it very tight lipped.
One thing to think about "Viva la Brent". IT has been a gigantic advantage to ford owners that the 03/04 cobra and gt 500 are supercharged because ford put forged and cast iron internal engine parts in both of these cars engines because of it. What this means is that either engine mentioned is capable of supporting a 800-1000hp vehical. There is not a chevy engine that has ever been made, nor is the 2009 camero engine going to be a built engine. Even the mighty new engine of the z06 does not have forged internals. So if you want to do any mods you have to spend a fortune in building up your engine.
References :
ford motor company, chevy motor company, motor trend, car and driver

the sad fact is, that ford isnt going to produce an affordable "rival" to the camaro. its not that they cant. fords the largest international automotive company in the world. whether ford can or not isnt the point (they could always take the panoz esparanza drivetrain and put it into a mustang line but thats not going to happen). fords marketing strategy is moving "upscale", so they arent concerned with the muscle car crowd, or the performance enthusiasts that want a fast car that can beat chevy. (as an example, look at the new focus. overseas the foci gets an inline 5 turbo charged AWD option . us market will never see a turbo focus, 4 or 5 cyl. and certainly not the AWD model.) ford is concerned with rivaling the japanese manufacturers and making economy cars that will sell in high numbers, and thats what its all about. ford doesnt see the market share of performance enthusiasts as strong enough to devote an entire line ot satisfy us. so we probably wont get anything better than a ford fusion or gt500. chevy is going to win alot of performance converts because of the new camaro.
References :
GT500KR 540hp.
A live rear axle will hold up much better than an IRS under these power levels. The GTO tears them up quite often as do the Terminator 03-04 Cobras. This is why the fast ones put a live axle in them.

ATTN: Mike K. The Z06 427ci Vette engine has Titanium rods and a 7000rpm redline. Better than forged internals!
References :
Ford has no answer to the Camaro. The Shelby GT 500 is the closet thing to an answer and because of it's heavy weight and the fact that it will be much more expensive it will still fall short. The new Camaro will most likely have an LS3 producing over 400hp and the car will weigh less than the GT 500. Factor in the high price of the GT 500 and the Camaro seems like your best bet. 50,000 bucks for the GT 500 with it's solid rear axel (the same thing it had in the 60s) seems like a rip off when compared to the cheaper Camaro with independant rear suspension.

Plus there is also the rumour of a supercharged Camaro. In stock form Ford's OHC system lacks the power of Chevy's LS Series engine. Ford need forced induction just to keep up, but there is no replacement for dicplacement (especially if the Camaro has a Supercharger).
References :
Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords

Ford will be producing different versions of its Mustang. There is a GT 500 version and I know there may also be a Mustang Bullet version. I don't recall which model year the Bullet will be for though. Both models should have more hp than the GT.

I think there may be even more versions planned, but I don't recall.
